In Assam, the first phase of elections to Bodoland Territorial Council passed off peacefully on Monday with more than 80% voter turn out in Udalguri and Baksa districts.
10 constituencies in Udalguri and 11 in Baksa went to polls in the first phase of the Bodoland Territorial Council elections in which the fate of 132 candidates are sealed in the ballot boxes, the counting of which will take place on December 12.
Since 7 am voters turned out in very large numbers to cast their votes in the polling stations spread across the two districts of BTR. The voting ended at 4:30 pm in the evening.
Strict Covid protocols were followed, including wearing of masks, sanitisation of polling stations and thermal screening of voters.
The main electoral battle this time is between the BPF, the BJP and the UPPL.In the second phase on December 10, two districts namely Kokrajhar and Chirang will go to polls.
A total of 23,82,036 voters, including 11,79,020 women, will exercise their franchise in the two phases of the polls to the 40-member council.
Adequate security arrangements have been made for free, fair and peaceful election with the deployment of 30 companies of paramilitary forces in the region.
