A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation to probe the sedition cases filed against the hardline Chief of the Islamist organisation Hefazat-e-Islam Junaid Babunagari and others who had allegedly threatened to pull down all the sculptures including that of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The court ordered the PBI to submit the report by January 7.
The case was filed by the Muktijodho Monch alleging that Junaid Babunagari and a few others had threatened to pull down the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman thus insulting the father of the nation and the constitution of the country.
In the meanwhile, the High Court in Dhaka ordered authorities to take immediate steps to protect all the statues of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman across the country.
A controversy has been generated in Bangladesh after the hardline Islamist organisation Hefazat-e-Islam Chief Junaid Babunagari and other office bearers threatened to tear down all sculptures in the country as they call it ‘un-Islamic’.
They are opposing the government plan to erect a sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the occasion of his birth centenary year ‘Mujib Borsho’ currently being observed in Bangladesh.
Following the threat, an under construction statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was damaged on Friday in Kushtia town of Bangladesh. Police have arrested four persons including two students of a local madrasa for vandalism.
